About the mission

We are looking for a mid-level ICT expert to support the Policy Department in modeling soil erosion and sediment transport to Flemish watercourses. The role involves running Python code, reporting, and implementing model improvements. Candidates should have proven experience in GIS, Jupyter Notebook, modeling, PostgreSQL, and Python.

Overview

The intended ICT expert (Mid-level) is responsible for supporting the Policy Department in modeling soil erosion and sediment transport to the Flemish watercourses, including the impact of erosion control measures via the WaTEM/SEDEM model. This model was developed by KU Leuven. The WaTEM/SEDEM model is written in FreePascal using the open-source software package Lazarus. For the spatial representation of data (input and output), raster formats of IDRISI (.rst) with accompanying metadata files (.RDC) are used. These rasters can be created and read via IDRISI, QGIS, and ArcGIS.

The WaTEM/SEDEM model has been further optimized, recalibrated, and operationalized by the Policy Department using Python (pywatemsedem and pywatemsedemvlaanderen). However, the model still needs to be expanded with new features, restructured, documented, and operationalized within the Policy Department.

Key Responsibilities

Support in running the notebooks and Python code.
Guidance for calculations on a Flemish scale concerning the sediment indicator.
Reporting.
Implementing the desired model improvements or expansions in the code (Python).
Maintenance, restructuring, and documentation (GitHub) of the developed Python code (pycnws).

Skills & Experience

Proven experience in GIS (ArcGIS - QGIS) - Must have
Proven experience with Jupyter Notebook - Must have
Proven experience in modeling - Must have
Proven experience with PostgreSQL + PostGis - Must have
Proven experience with Python - Must have
Proven experience with WaTEM/SEDEM - Must have
Proven experience with the technology in question or a similar technology - Must have, 5 Years, Senior
Proven knowledge regarding erosion and sediment issues - Should have
Higher education (Master's or Bachelor's) with a technical/engineering background or equivalent through experience with ICT technology for which expertise is requested - Should have

Languages

Language requirement: Dutch at European CEFR level C2.

Additional Info

The assignment is part of the implementation of the River Basin Management Plans 2023-2027 and is part of action 8B_A_0100 regarding the development of erosion control scenarios for priority areas of sediment input to watercourses and sewage.
