We are looking for a senior Database Architect to lead a critical migration project from Sybase to PostgreSQL. This role involves hands-on implementation, architecture design, and coaching within a strategic program that modernizes the database infrastructure for healthcare platforms.

We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Database Architect for a critical migration project.

Context of the Assignment

You will be part of a strategic program where the existing database infrastructure is being migrated from Sybase (ASE) to PostgreSQL. This project is essential for the further modernization and scalability of the platforms within Nexuzhealth. Nexuzhealth develops and manages the Clinical Workstation (KWS), the electronic patient record used daily by more than 130,000 healthcare providers. You will directly contribute to the digital backbone of Belgian healthcare.

Your Role

As a Database Architect, you are a key player in this migration and responsible for defining, realizing, and optimizing the new PostgreSQL environment. You combine architecture, hands-on implementation, and coaching to ensure that the new environment achieves at least the same performance and stability as the existing Sybase environment.

Responsibilities

•Design the target architecture on PostgreSQL and monitor performance and scalability

•Translate and redesign complex Sybase T-SQL patterns into PostgreSQL

•Optimize performance (indexing, query tuning, partitioning, etc.)

•Develop data validation and quality controls to avoid data loss

•Support the cutover and migration strategy

•Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the team

•Set up automation for database management and monitoring

•Assist in supporting the existing Sybase environment during the transition

Desired Profile

•Strong experience as a Database Architect / Senior DBA

•In-depth expertise in PostgreSQL (design, tuning, optimization)

•Experience with large-scale database migrations and legacy environments

•Knowledge of PostgreSQL extensions (e.g., pg_logical, pg_vector) is a plus

•Experience with SQL dialect conversion (Sybase to PostgreSQL)

•Experience with performance tuning and query optimization

•Knowledge of Linux/Unix and scripting (shell, tuning, automation)

•Experience with database administration and automation

•Knowledge of Java environments is a plus

•Experience with Sybase ASE is an advantage (not a must, willingness to learn is sufficient)

•Participation in on-call duties or maintenance outside office hours may be requested sporadically.

•Candidates will be administratively processed but will work substantively for Nexuzhealth.
